Whether you work outside or indoors, the winter can be a wet, icy and snowy time, making it far more likely that people will slip, fall and hurt themselves. In fact, last winter, nearly 33 percent of all workers’ compensation claims that were filed in snowy, cold regions in the U.S. involved workplace injuries caused by winter slip and fall accidents.
Because winter slip and fall accidents can be as damaging as any other types of workplace injuries, in this three-part blog series, we will point out some important tips to keep in mind to help you reduce the chances that you will be hurt by winter slip and fall accidents at work.
If, however, you end up getting hurt in a slip and fall accident – or any type of accident – at work, don’t hesitate to contact Denver Workers’ Compensation Attorney Jennifer Bisset. She is ready to stand up for your rights and help you obtain benefits after workplace injuries occur.
How to Avoid Winter Slip and Fall Accidents at Work
Tip 1 – Wear the right shoes.
While this tip for avoiding winter slip and fall accidents may be obvious to some, it is worth going over, as many people forget how important it is to wear the appropriate shoes during the wintertime. In particular, “appropriate” shoes for winter should be those that:
- Are flat
- Have sufficient tread
- Keep your feet warm and dry.
While boots are ideal, especially in snowy locales or in the event workers spend a significant part of their days outside in cold, wet winter conditions, any shoes that meet the above requirements may work.
Here, it’s also important to point out that:
- You don’t have to wear heavy outdoor winter boots all day at work.
- You can change your shoes once you get to work if you want to wear something lighter (or “fashionable”) indoors.
For our continued discussion of what you can do to reduce your risk of getting hurt in winter slip and fall accidents, be sure to check out the second and third parts of this blog series that will be published soon!
