Each year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes an in-depth report detailing the number of fatal workplace injuries that occur in various occupations and industries. In this blog series, we’ll highlight the findings of the BLS’ most recent report on this topic (entitled Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, CFOI) to pinpoint some of the most dangerous jobs in the U.S.

While these findings are interesting and, for some, may not be so surprising, it’s important that families who have lost a loved one to a fatal workplace injury know that:

  • They likely have rights to death benefits.
  • Although no amount of money can make up for the loss of a loved one, Denver Workers’ Compensation Attorney Jennifer Bisset is here for these families and can help them obtain the death benefits to which they are entitled.

Top 6 Most Dangerous Jobs in the U.S.

According to the CFOI, the following are the most dangerous jobs in the U.S. (based on the number of fatal workplace injuries sustained in the occupation annually):According to the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, the top three most dangerous jobs in the U.S. are loggers, fishermen and pilots.

  1. Loggers – As the most dangerous job in the U.S., working in the logging industry presents many risks to people. From falling from trees and being hit by objects to being involved in chainsaw (and other machinery) accidents, loggers face many serious risks when working. The CFOI found that the death rate for loggers exceeds 127 for every 100,000 workers in the industry.
  2. Fishermen – As the second most dangerous job in the U.S. fishermen face a variety of life-threatening risks on a daily basis. From the risks of drowning and being involved in heavy machinery accidents to the risks of being crushed by equipment, fishermen risk their lives every day they are on the job. According to the CFOI, the death rate for fishermen is about 117 per every 100,000 workers in the industry.
  3. Pilots – The primary reason that being a pilot is such a dangerous job in the U.S. is that there is a significant risk of plane crashes for these professionals. According to the CFOI, the death rate for pilots is more than 53 for every 100,000 workers in the aviation industry.
