When considering the potential dangers that are the most prevalent in various U.S. workplaces, factors like unsafe premises, defective machinery or even violent coworkers may be some of the more common things that tend to come to mind first.
Workplace noise exposure, however, and its ability to cause irreversible hearing loss are far more common and dangerous than people may think, making it imperative that:
- Employers abide by OSHA standards for maximum workplace noise exposure.
- Employees are aware of how to protect their hearing if or when they work in especially noisy environments.
- People who may be developing hearing loss get the medical treatments necessary to prevent further damage to their hearing.
In this blog series, we will take a closer look at how prevalent hearing loss is among American workers and what can be done to reduce this risk. If you’ve sustained permanent hearing damage (or other injuries) in the course of your work and are considering moving forward with a workers’ compensation claim, contact Denver Workers’ Compensation Attorney Jennifer Bisset for a professional case evaluation and expert advice regarding your best options.
Facts about Workplace Noise Exposure
According to reports compiled by officials at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH):
- Close to 30 million people in the U.S. are regularly exposed to excessive workplace noise levels.
- Such regular workplace noise exposure increases the risk that these workers will develop tinnitus (ringing in the ears that tends to signify hearing damage). Additionally, over time, regular workplace noise exposure can cause hyperacusis (sensitivity to noise) and permanent hearing loss (i.e., deafness).
- Over the past decade, upwards of 125,000 American workers have suffered irreversible hearing loss due to workplace noise exposure. The actual number of affected American workers, however, is likely much greater, as this estimate is conservative and doesn’t account for the fact that many cases of workplace hearing loss go undocumented.
In the upcoming additional parts of this blog series, we will take a closer look at what can be done to protect people’s hearing when they work in noisy environments. Be sure to check out them out!
